Machinist Handbook      45 hours

This course provides detailed instructions in reading, interpreting and applying mathematics, (including tables and charts found in the machinist’s handbook). Through the completion of formulas and mathematical representations participants will calculate and assimilate machining variables to use in the parts manufacturing set-up process. Topics include:

  • Mathematics: positive and negative numbers, powers, roots, reciprocals and fractionsAlgebra & Equations: ratio/proportion,  percentages, principles, algebraic expressions/formulas, equations
  • Geometry: geometrical constructions, area/volume, cylindrical tanks, plane figures, volume of solids/circles/squares/ hexagons
  • Triangles and Trigonometry: solution of triangles, law of sine/cosine, trigonometry identifiers, right/oblique triangles
  • Logarithms: common and natural logarithms, interpolation from tables using tables

Machine Tool (Level I)      32 Hours

This course is an introduction to machine shop techniques and concentrates on the methodology of process and equipment, including safe operation procedures for mechanical equipment and tooling.  Topics include:

  • Machine tools
  • Safety
  • Job planning
  • Measurement
  • Layout tools and procedures
  • Hand tools and bench work
  • Metal cutting technology
  • Drilling machine
  • Lathe operations
  • Milling machine

Machine Tool (Level II)      45 Hours

This course includes the application and operation of various machine tools used to layout and manufacture according to drawing specifications.   Topics include:

  • Mounting, removing and aligning lathe centers
  • Machine between centers
  • Tapers and taper turning
  • Threads and thread cutting
  • Drilling, boring, reaming and lapping
  • Milling cutters
  • Cutting speed, feed and depth of cut
  • Indexing or dividing head
  • Gear cutting
  • Jig bores
  • Jig boring holes
  • Parts fabrication

Tools & Cutter Grinding          16-24 Hours

This course provides participants with the opportunity to explore a variety of set-ups on the tool and cutter grinder.   This mostly hands-on course includes  exercises in:  

  • Work locating and holding devices
  • Grind the correct geometry on a wide-range of types and sizes of cutting tools
  • Apply tool and cutter terminology used in the manufacture and remanufacturing of cutting tools
  • Tolerance control

MANUFACTURING SKILLS - MISC

Basic Industrial Math   8-16 hours

This course is designed with the industrial worker in mind.  Basic operations with whole numbers through fundamental concepts of trigonometry are explored.  Many examples, questions and applications are presented.  Topics include:

  • Whole numbers
  • Fractions
  • Decimal numbers
  • Ratio
  • Proportion
  • Measurement and direct measurements using the English and Metric units

Fundamentals of Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry    16-24 hours

This course introduces the fundamental concepts of basic Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry.  Topics include:

  • Linear equations
  • Solving for an unknown
  • Basic shapes such as triangles, circles, parallelograms
  • Solving for unknown angles, surface area, and volume
  • Usage of Sin, Cosin, and Tangent functions

How to Read Industrial Gages   8 hours

This course is intended to familiarize students with mechanical and electromechanical gages in an industrial environment.  Topics include:

  • Micrometers
  • Calipers
  • Snap Gages
  • Dial Indicator Gages (mechanical & electrical)
  • Air Gages
  • Plug Gages
  • Thread Gages
  • Ring Gages
  • Basic Three Dimensional Measuring Machines

Mechanical Comprehension & Spatial Recognition    4 hours

This course covers an introduction to mechanical and spatial abilities and includes various practice exercises.  Topics include:

  • Gears
  • Pulleys
  • Basic electricity
  • Gravity
  • Levers
  • Mechanics and physics of objects
  • Weight and strength of materials
  • Effects of heat and cold
  • Flat and solid objects: rotated, flipped or reversed
  • Viewing how objects are constructed

Metric System Overview    8 hours

This course introduces the fundamental concepts of the Metric System for length, area, volume, weight and time.
