This unit examines why organizations move to teams and discusses the challenges and rewards for team members. Participants explore different kinds of teams, their new role as team members, and ways they can contribute to the development of teams in their organization.
The Basic Principles of Teamwork (4 hours)
In today’s rapidly changing work environment, teams constantly face new situations that require quick and decisive action. How successfully a team can react depends largely on the values that guide its members. The Basic Principles are a set of shared values that help team members work together more effectively as they face the challenges ahead. Participants review The Basic Principles to learn how to take risks, learn from mistakes, share information, and deal with changes.

Keeping Your Team on Course: Tools and Techniques (4 hours)
Keeping a team on course as its members work together to accomplish the team’s mission and goals is the responsibility of every member – not just the team leader. This unit provides 12 tools and techniques that help team members guide the team as it works through a variety of situations. These tools include the following: Team Formation Checklist; Balancing the Team’s Workload; Listening for a Win-Win; Avoiding Groupthink; and Recognizing Milestones.

Playing a Vital Role in Team Decisions (4 hours)
While most people have had experience making decisions, few people have had much experience making decisions in teams. This unit shows participants how to take an active role in making the decisions that the team faces. It encourages team members to take a win-win approach in defining the group’s best course of action. The “Key Actions” will ensure that all team members are clear about the method used to reach the decision, the expected outcome and the resources and information others need so they can support the decision.

Developing Team Plans (4 hours)
Successful completion of team projects depends on a sound, flexible planning process. This unit introduces steps that ensure a team will coordinate tasks smoothly and efficiently. Participants learn to analyze assignments and projects, develop well-thought-out plans, anticipate obstacles, and seek alternatives for handling contingencies.

Raising Difficult Issues with Your Team (4 hours)
A crucial team skill knows how to handle situations that impede the team’s ability to accomplish its mission and goals. Some of these issues are difficult to raise, especially those that result from another member’s action, but we must still address them sensitively and honestly so the team can move forward. This unit helps participants raise these difficult issues in a way that builds trust and the ability to work together as a team.
