Hazard Communications (Right to Know) 2 hours
(Meets regulatory requirements for: OSHA Standard 1910.1200, MIOSHA Standards Parts 42, 92 and 430)
This course will provide participants with information on hazardous materials in their work area. Topics include:
- Chemical hazards
- Material Safety Data Sheets
- Types of hazardous material
- Employer and employee responsibilities
- Container labeling and other forms of warning
- Information sources
Hazardous Materials - Awareness 4 hours
(Meets regulatory requirements for: OSHA Standard 1910.120 and 1200, 49 CFR 172.704, MIOSHA Standards Parts 42, 92 and 430)
This course combines the requirements of Hazard Communications and Awareness level training. Participants will become familiar with the location, and use, of MSDS and emergency plans. This course is intended for individuals who will not be participating in an emergency response but working in an environment where a hazardous substance release is possible. Topics include:
- Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
- Self-protection measures
- Awareness of security risks associated with hazardous materials
- Site emergency plans and site policies for hazardous release
- North American Emergency Response Guidebook
- NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards
Hazardous Materials - Operations (Initial) 40 hours
(Meets regulatory requirements for: OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.120 and 1200, 49 CFR parts 100-185 and 311, NFPA 471 and 472, MIOSHA Standards Parts 1, 93, and 432)
This course will familiarize participants with the regulatory requirements related to hazardous materials emergencies at the operations level. Practical exercises will demonstrate the limitations and risks involved with the use of emergency equipment and proper containment processes. Topics include:
- Regulatory requirements
- Types of hazardous substances
- Emergency Response Plans
- Personal protective equipment
- Containment and decontamination methodologies
- Types of hazardous substances
- Air monitoring
- Medical Surveillance Program
- North American Emergency Response Guide
- NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards
Hazardous Materials - Operations (Refresher) 8 hours
(Meets regulatory requirements for: OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.120 and 1200, 49 CFR parts 100-185 and 311, NFPA 471 and 472, MIOSHA Standards Parts 1, 93, and 432)
This course provides refresher training in responding to hazardous materials incidents at the operations level. Participants will review personal protective equipment, safety precautions, available resources and techniques for responding to a hazmat incident in a safe manner.
Note: Participants must complete the initial 40 hour course to be eligible for the refresher.
Hazardous Materials – Technician (Initial) 40 hours
(Meets regulatory requirements for: OSHA Standard 29 CFR 172.704, 1910.120 and 1200, 49 CFR parts 100-185 and 311, NFPA 471 and 472, MIOSHA Standards Parts 1, 93, and 432, EPA 40 CFR 311.1)
This course will familiarize participants with the regulatory requirements related to hazardous materials emergencies and the duties of the Hazardous Materials Technician. Participants will become familiar with processes for containing, controlling and isolating a hazardous materials release. Topics include:
- Regulatory requirements
- Types of hazardous substances
- Emergency Response Plans
- Personal protective equipment
- Containment and decontamination methodologies
- Air monitoring
- Medical Surveillance Program
- North American Emergency Response Guide
- NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards
Hazardous Materials – Technician (Refresher) 8 hours

Hazardous Materials – Incident Commander (Initial) 40 hours
(Meets regulatory requirements for: OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.120 and 1200, 49 CFR parts 100-185 and 311, NFPA 471 and 472, MIOSHA Standards Parts 1, 93, and 432)
This course is intended for individuals who will be responsible for taking control and coordinating response efforts. Participants will become familiar with the regulatory requirements related to hazardous materials emergencies and will practice responding at the operations level and as an Incident Commander. Topics include:
- Regulatory requirements
- Types of hazardous substances
- Emergency Response Plans
- Personal protective equipment
- Containment and decontamination methodologies
- Incident command history, structure and standardized terminology
- NIMS
- Local/state/federal resources
- North American Emergency Response Guide
- NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards
Hazardous Materials – Incident Commander (Refresher) 8 hours
(Meets regulatory requirements for: OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.120 and 1200, 49 CFR parts 100-185 and 311, NFPA 471 and 472, MIOSHA Standards Parts 1, 93, and 432)
This course provides refresher training for individuals having previous qualification as an Incident Commander. Participants will refresh their knowledge of command structure and the basics for processes used in responding to Hazmat incidents. Course will also cover any changes to laws and regulations.
Hazardous Materials Transportation 16 hours
(Meets regulatory requirements for: OSHA Standard 10 CFR 49)
This course will guide participants through the purpose, scope and applicability of the U.S. DOT Hazardous Material Regulations and their responsibility in regulatory compliance pertaining to non-bulk transportation of hazardous materials and hazardous substances by highway. Topics include:
- Nine classifications of Hazardous Materials including conditions that do and do not require vehicle placarding
- Packing Groups and their corresponding dangers
- Identification of acceptable methods for marking hazmat packages
- Selection and identification of proper labels and label location for hazmat packages
- Shipping papers – appropriate documentation requirements
- Placard placement and placard configurations
- Identification of the segregation and separation requirements for hazardous materials
HAZWOPER – Various Levels
HAZWOPER training, while similar to the offerings outlined under “Hazardous Materials”, applies only to five distinct groups of employers and employees:
- Clean-up operations
- Corrective actions involving clean-up operations
- Voluntary clean-up operations recognized as uncontrolled waste sites
- Operations involving hazardous wastes
- Emergency response operations
